Astronomers Chart the Biggest Map There Is

A new 2D map of the universe just became the largest ever compiled, giving cosmologists a fresh baseline for tracking how matter clusters across cosmic scales. It lands alongside plenty of other space news today: ESA's Sentinel-1 satellite documented major ice loss from a Greenland glacier, its photosynthesis satellite got fueled for launch, and Mars Express released a flythrough of Schiaparelli Crater. Curiosity, meanwhile, turned up a massive field of polygon-shaped ground features on Mars.

On the AI side, DeepMind alumni startup Inherent claims its AI 'teammate' beat both Anthropic and OpenAI at replicating research results, a notable benchmark if it holds up. Linus Torvalds used AI to track down a bug in an Intel GPU driver, a small but telling sign of AI creeping into kernel-level debugging. Less flattering: a new study found AI use boosted homework scores but exam scores dropped afterward, suggesting the help isn't translating into retained knowledge.

Elsewhere, Casio is finally giving its no-frills digital watch some smarts, 25 years after 3dfx died the Voodoo 3 just got an updated Linux driver that lets classic cards boot without a PC BIOS, and Kobo e-readers can now run apps. Anna's Archive is calling for volunteers to scan physical books before AI companies buy up and destroy them, warning that knowledge is being locked away on private servers.
